WordPress AI
WordPress has a built-in AI client that other plugins and themes can use. AI Puffer can answer those requests with the providers you’ve already connected, so you manage keys, see logs and track costs in one place.
Turn it on
Section titled “Turn it on”In Settings › For developers › WordPress AI, switch on Handle WordPress AI requests. Or, in WordPress’s Settings › Connectors, select Enable on the AI Puffer banner.
Your providers then appear in Settings › Connectors as “OpenAI via AI Puffer”, “AI Puffer Cloud via AI Puffer” and so on. Their keys stay in AI Puffer; Edit on a connector takes you to AI Puffer’s settings.
Stop on the banner, or the switch, turns it off again. Your keys aren’t touched.
How requests are answered
Section titled “How requests are answered”- Text goes to your default provider from Settings › AI, with its default model. A plugin asking for a fast model gets that provider’s quickest one.
- Images go to OpenAI, Google, xAI, OpenRouter or Azure, the first one connected. If AI Puffer Cloud is your default, everything goes through Cloud.
- A plugin can also ask for a specific connector and model.
Every request appears in Usage as WP AI Client, with what it cost. Only text and images are handled; not embeddings, speech or video.
This shows only on sites where WordPress provides its AI client.
