Understand WordPress email errors from chat.

Review recorded sending errors, understand a failure and compare new evidence after an email setup change from ChatGPT or Claude.

Tested by us on 31 October 2026 with WP Mail SMTP Lite 4.10.3, from ChatGPT and Claude. Requires WP Mail SMTP 4.9 or later, WordPress 6.9 or later with the Abilities API, and an AI Puffer website connection. Pro email logs and statistics are outside this tested scope.

Things to ask

  • “Check my 20 most recent recorded email errors.”See the matching total, inspected sample and repeated problems.
  • “Explain the newest sending failure.”Separate the recorded facts from possible causes and next steps.
  • “Recheck after my email setup change.”Compare new IDs and times with the earlier baseline.

Before you start

Use WP Mail SMTP 4.9 or later and WordPress 6.9 or later with the Abilities API. Connect AI Puffer with a WordPress user who can access WP Mail SMTP’s settings, usually an administrator. No additional MCP adapter or connector plugin is needed.

These workflows work with WP Mail SMTP Lite and Pro, on AI Puffer Free and paid plans. They use normal website actions and do not use AI Puffer AI credits.

What you can ask

  • “Check my 20 most recent recorded email errors.”
  • “Explain the newest sending failure and what I should do next.”
  • “Compare the latest errors with the ones we inspected before my fix.”

Your assistant uses WP Mail SMTP’s native read-only debug-event ability. It reports event IDs, timestamps, relevant messages and the number of records it inspected. A total can include more matching records than the current page.

Understand the evidence

The Lite reader supports error/debug severity and pagination. It returns the newest event IDs first. It does not offer recipient or date-range filters. Your assistant can review a bounded sample and should explain any incomplete coverage.

An authentication rejection, connection failure or provider limit can help identify the next step. Your assistant should distinguish what the recorded error says from a possible cause that still needs checking.

An empty log does not prove that email is working. The tested plugin always records sending errors, but old events may have expired or been cleared, or no relevant attempt may have occurred. Optional debug recording can be off. Debug messages may describe attempts rather than successful delivery. After a fix, compare new event IDs and timestamps with the earlier baseline. Old failures can remain in the log.

Lite and Pro

Debug-event inspection is available in both editions of WP Mail SMTP. Full email logs and sending statistics require WP Mail SMTP Pro and are outside this tested Lite integration. An AI Puffer paid plan does not unlock those third-party paid features.

Permissions and scope

Read only, Standard and Trusted use the connected WordPress user’s native permissions. These inspections do not change settings, clear logs, reconnect a provider or send email.

Your SMTP passwords, API keys and OAuth tokens are not needed for an error review. A separate test email or form submission requires an explicit request and recipient. A reported send or local mail capture is separate from a confirmed inbox receipt.
